A Day in the Life of Walter Scott

The alarm clock sounds at 3:30 am, for most of the working population this would be an absurd time to be rising for a day at the office, but Walter's feet hit the floor and he is set for another day in... or out of the office. Walter Scott, Acronis' CEO began adolescence in the military, a choice he believes moulded him into what he has become today. Following a period of service, Walter returned to his small hometown of Maine where he studied to become a Bachelor of Marketing, which lead to him studying a MA in Business..

Walter's work takes him across the globe, but on the days he spends in the office, life is very regimented. Walter remarkably manages a strict worklife ratio. Whilst travelling the world, Walter is in constant communication with his son Walter Scott IV, and his college sweetheart wife Christina — a dedicated follower of Walter's career. Walter describes her as, "the world's most wonderful wife," whom he would not trade for the world.

Work starts before Walter has even left for the office by checking a few emails on his blackberry, then he sets off on his daily drive to the Acronis headquarters situated in Burlington, Massachusetts; approximately ten minutes drive from Walter's home.

Arriving at the office around 4:30am, 3 computer monitors await Walter's attention. Once a response has been made to approximately 100 emails which have accumulated overnight, Walter will then begin reviewing the nightly reports and planning a way forward.

Walter believes in 'tone at the top' — so that if he projects a hard working ethic, others will follow suit. This is obviously the case, because by 6:00am the managing team appear for a day's work. Daily meetings begin with Ed Harnish, VP Marketing at Acronis. Daily marketing and PR activities are discussed, along with ongoing projects and campaigns.

The daily 8:30am meeting with John Murgo, Acronis' CFO begins. This regular meeting is crucial to discuss the many finance issues that effect this large organisation, such as tax, insurance and logistics, and to ensure everything is running smoothly.

The remainder of the morning is made up of partnership meetings. Walter takes time to discuss management, and maintains the relationships with some of the industry's biggest players such as Microsoft and Novel. Walter also uses the mornings to budgets develop and monitor corporate budgets.

Lunch is always taken on the go, and blends seamlessly into an afternoon spent on the domestic business, sitting in on management team meetings, discussing how best to build up the company's infrastructure, and overseeing the continual recruitment programme, which attracts graduates from top universities such as Princeton and Harvard.

During the course of the day, up to another 200 emails have accumulated, which are all replied to before the day's work is finally wrapped up around 6:00pm. Whenever possible, the family will enjoy dinner together, and Walter will spend some quality time with his son by helping him with homework or playing a game.

Walter junior will be put to bed at 8, then it is time for Walter senior to spend the evening with Christina, a very understanding wife who recognises Walter's goals, and supports him all the way, even when he retires back to his emails for a final hour to review the day.
